Immaterial is a hand-drawn animated film that explores the interaction between music and the moving image. This project is a collaboration between Irini Karayannopoulou (animation) Sandrine Cheyrol (editing) and Yannis Saxonis, who composed all 21 different soundtracks of the film. Each of these original scores envelopes, determines and transforms the film in an almost alchemical way. The composer worked closely with the artists, using a modular synthesizer and recordings of Irini’s voice. The result is like a vision emerging from the mist, a dazed mix of enigmatic scenes and sounds that engage the spectator in a particularly addictive way. The film’s seductive, constantly changing forms can only be compared to a succession of suspended dreams. Immaterial was part of Common View, a contemporary art programme at the National Theater of Greece. It was also presented at Irini’s solo show (Lola Nikolaou Gallery, Thessaloniki) and at the Municipality of Athens as part of a group exhibition curated by Theophilos Tramboulis.
On show are 3 of the 21 different versions of Immaterial.
