Monaco is an experimental musical, a semi-educational journey into the French Principality, conceived in collaboration with the artist duo Extra-Conjugale. Casinos, stars, real estate, Formula 1, art nouveau, seaside villas, photogenic sunsets, the Princess, the Palace, the Yacht Club, champagne and diamonds, all in one, effervescent film. The jewel that is Monte Carlo is a particularly glossy kind of place, out of reach and out of space. In the film, Twin Automat reflect on the city’s outrageous architecture and geopolitics using material from Extra-Conjugale’s day trip to Monaco. Photos, drawings, archival material, video footage, end up becoming a single solid body. In addition, the soundtrack of the film is a deliberately decomposed, decadent cover of Jean Michel Maurice’s slow song, Monaco, 28° à l’ombre, as performed by Extra-Conjugale. The film was presented at the artist duo’s solo show at Luis Leu Gallery in Karlsruhe, Germany. An extended version of the work was presented at the 1st Biennial of Performance in Athens, Greece.
